Read: Psalm 91:1-5
Christian Devotions Memory Verse
“Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler,
and from the noisome pestilence” (Psalm 91:3 KJV)
secret place of God depicted by landscapeSome rich men do
have underground apartment as a secret place in their home. The seat of
government of many countries also have secret places – some in form of underground
bunkers. These are secret places of escape whenever troubles or unforeseen
danger comes up. Such places are usually very secure as a hiding place from the
enemy. However, a stronger power or enemy can besiege a secret place, destroy
it, capture or even kill those hiding in it. For example, Laurent Gbagbo
(erstwhile president of Ivory Coast) was captured in a bunker in his home when
he attempted to cling on to power after losing election. A stronger force led by French army came
against him, killed those guarding him and arrested him. That is the limit to
the secret place of man.
Now let us talk about the Most High and His secret place.
Who is the Most High? The Lord (Jehovah) is the Most High (Psalm 83:18). Why is
the Lord called the Most High? It is because he is higher than all other gods
(Ephesians 1:20-22). The Lord (Most High) is the creator of heaven and earth
(Psalm 24:1, Genesis 14:22) – He created them and so they belong to Him.
Another thing you need to know about the Most High is that he is a King (Psalm
47:2): A King that is strong and mighty; a king that is mighty in battle (Psalm
24:8); a King that cannot be dethroned; He is a king that lives forever (Psalm
92:8).
With the above description of the Most High God, you can
imagine how His secret place will be. That is why Paul wrote in his letter to
the Romans “if God be for us who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31). The secret
place of the Most High God is the most secure place we can ever hide our head.
The battle in this world may be raging but God has given us assurance of
deliverance and protection if we come to hide in his secret place. These are
some of the benefits of hiding in the secret place of God:
Deliverance from the snare of the fowler (Psalm 91:3): The
fowlers are the enemies hunting you which you know not about. They set their
trap all around waiting for you to be entrapped, but the Most High has promised
and I know that he will never fail. The psalmist used the word ‘SURELY’. It
means without doubt God will deliver you from the snare of the enemy. I pray
that God will deliver you as you call on Him in prayer in Jesus name.
Deliverance from the noisome pestilence (Psalm 91:3):
Noisome pestilence could be any destructive plague or diseases – it could be
cancer, diabetes, Asthma etc. God is a healer (1Peter 2:24). The Most High God
has promised to deliver you. Call on Him and remind Him of his promises. The
Most High will send his word to your life and you will not die in that sickness
in the name of Jesus.
Thank you for reading,
but please note; if you are not yet born again (I mean you have not
received Jesus as your Lord and Saviour), it means you are not under the secret
place of the Most High God. But you can do so right way and become a child of
God. Please bow down your head and say this prayer of salvation.
Last week we discussed two benefits of dwelling in the
secret place of the Most High God – deliverance from the snare of the fowler
(unknown enemies) and from noisome pestilences (sickness). Today we shall go
further to see some other benefits.
Dwelling in the secret place of God is a wonderful
experience; experience that brings peace and drives away fear. If a man is not
under the cover of the Most High, anything can befall him because he is just on
his own. When the evil wind of life is boisterous he won’t have any cover for
the wind. It is a dangerous thing to be alone. The bible says woe to him that
is alone.
“Two are better than one; because they have a good reward
for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to
him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.”
(Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 KJV)
Thanks be to God for he is our dwelling place. Now what are
the other benefits of making God our dwelling place?
Cover
with His feathers (Psalm 91:4): The Most High God has feathers and
here is a promise from Him; a promise of protection. When someone is under the
protection of the Almighty God, he won’t have anything to fear. When the wicked
rise up against him, he won’t have to fight. All he needs do is to report the
enemy to God in prayer and the Most High will fight his battle and the enemy
will fall (Exodus 14:14, Psalm 27:2).
His truth
as Shield and Buckler (Psalm 91:4): The word of God is the truth of
God. Jesus is both the Word of God and the truth of God, for he says in John
14:6 “I am the way, the truth and the life”. What the scripture is saying is
that Jesus shall be your armour and defence. Remember the scripture says “that
at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in
earth, and things under the earth;” (Philippians 2:10). The name of Jesus is a
powerful weapon that wins war both in heaven and on earth. Now you have that
name – the name that is above every other name. It is now your responsibility
to accept it, hold on to it and use it as an instrument of warfare. You can’t
have a better shield and buckler than the truth of God – which is Jesus Christ.
Call upon his name today and he will answer you. Also study the word of God
daily, meditate upon it and apply it to your life.
Unfortunately, God can not be a shield or defence to those
who don’t want him. If a man refuses to accept Jesus as Lord over his life, God
will leave him alone. He will assume the fellow has a way of protecting himself
against the wiles of the devil. But that can be corrected if the fellow
repented and call on God to save his soul. If that described you, then call on
God today for the salvation of your soul. He will have mercy on you and save
your soul.
If you don’t have relationship with Jesus, the Most High
cannot be anything to you. Please bow down your head and say this short prayer
of salvation today.

Psalm 91:
The benefit of dwelling in the secret place of the Most High… 06feb10
He that
dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of
the Almighty.
I looked up
the word dwell and the first definition said to remain for a time. When you
dwell somewhere you are going to get comfortable because you are not leaving
right away. You are going to take your shoes off, take your coat off, and
remain for some time. When we get into our “secret place” we are not doing a
drive by or hitting it and running. We are there to spend some time with God.
This can be by just sitting in his presence and meditating on God, this can be
reading and meditating on his word, or spending time in prayer.
Psalms 91
from verse 2 down to verse 8 begins to talk about God being our refuge and
fortress, of us being able to trust in the Lord. When you spend time with
someone you can begin to trust them. When you learn the ways of God by reading
his word, you begin to see that the Word of God is true and that he does not
lie. When we spend more time with God and less time with our problems and
situations you begin to see God in a different light. He said that Surely he
shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome
pestilence. When you spend time in prayer and walk by faith, God will direct
you around the snare or entanglement.
He does
this by covering you. Psalms 91:4 says, “He shall cover thee with his feathers,
and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and
buckler.” He covers you because he is the strong tower that you can run to and
hide behind; he covers you by putting people in place to pray for you at 2 or 3
in the morning; He covers you so that you are not afraid by day or by night.
So why is
God doing all of this for us? His Word says that, “Because thou hast made the
Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation…When you begin to
make the Lord God your habitation…What is a habitation? A dwelling place. When
we begin to make God our habitation, our dwelling place, the place where we
come to spend time; we come into the presence of God and begin to spend time
with God so he becomes our habitation. When we begin to do this God begins to
bless us. The scripture goes on to say that, “There shall NO evil befall thee,
neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.” This is the blessing of
making God our dwelling place. He will give his angels charge over thee, to
keep the in all thy ways. He will send his angels to watch over us and bear us
up if we look like we might slip and fall.
Psalms 91
goes on to say that because God has set his Love upon Us, because we have spent
time with him in our secret place, He will deliver us and set us on high. It
says because he hath known my name. Because we know His name; we know who He
is. Because we have dwelt and made time to know God, he blesses us. Now we can
call upon the Name of the Lord when we are in trouble and distressed and know
for certain that God will answer and be with us when we are going through our
storms. We know that he will deliver us and show us salvation.
In the
secret place, you find peace for your soul. God reassures you that you don’t
have to worry. He gives you remembrance of His word, when you spend time with
him so that you know without a shadow of a doubt that God is with you and you
don’t have to fear. Though the storm may rise all around you, when it is God’s
time for your storm to be over, He will say, “Peace be still.” When we spend
quality time with God we learn that peace exists even when hell is still going
on around us. Spending time with God makes you confident that even though it looks
like major chaos around us, we still have nothing to fear. God will be speaking
to us and letting us know to just hold on and stand fast; that He is working
things out, even though that is not what it looks like. God never fails.
When we
stay in His word and in His presence we are letting him guide us into our
destiny. They only way to do this is to submit and the only way to submit is to
humble yourself and pray.
